Buzz Bake Sale
By Ben Pawliger
The 16th annual Buzz Bake Sale, sponsored by 103.1 The Buzz, was a day where South Florida Rock fans can really enjoy some live, loud, captivating music. Many Florida rock fans came out to the Cruzan Amphitheater on a warm South Florida December day to watch their favorite bands perform live in front of thousands of fans.
These bands include Seether, Hinder, Everlast, Art of Dying, Middle Class Rut, and Falling in Reverse. Fans of these bands included everyone from teenagers to retirees. All day South Florida rock fans were singing (or shouting in some cases) while jumping with fists high in the air along with their favorite bands on stage. Other fans though, brought lawn chairs and towels and just lied down on the large field facing the stage while their favorite bands performed. Some highlights of the day for the fans other than seeing their favorite bands perform live, was meeting them!
Many bands, once they performed, got to meet their fans, as well as give out autographs to those who wished. The whole day of performances cruised into the night, until Seether rocked the whole place off its feet, ending the venue with fans pleased. “They really rocked the show! It was an amazing performance!”-one Seether fan said after watching them close out the concert. Overall, Buzz Bake Sale was a day for South Florida Rock fans to listen, sing along, and have fun with their favorite musicians!

SALMA AND ANTONIO INTERVIEW

By Ben Pawliger and Alex Goldstein

Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas have worked together multiple times in movies, including Frida, Spy Kids 3D, Desperado, and now Puss in Boots. We recently had the opportunity to talk to them about Puss in Boots.

What motivated you to participate in Puss and Boots?

Antonio- “The first motivation is that I saw Shrek and I was very blessed with the new approach to animation movies…And then when they called me, I couldn’t believe it.”

Salma- “I was in Paris and I got a call, and they said would you like to do this, and life couldn’t have been more perfect. I love the Shrek films and I love Antonio and how he skyrocketed and what he did with it and I was so honored I had this opportunity.”

You have worked together so many times, what do you like about working with each other?

Salma- “I have never worked with somebody who is so enthusiastic about what they do. He really is such a storyteller by nature and he loves what he does.  He is also very generous and he makes you better as a performer.”

Antonio- “In a good love story, I tend to think that when you think about things that are working, you have a tendency to lose it. I prefer to not know those things that are making us work.”

If you could give some motivational or inspirational statements to today’s parents and those watching the movie, what would you say?

Salma-“I think it’s important for parents to indulge children’s imagination so their brain can be malleable and so it has no limits to what it can believe.”

Antonio-“In a world like today where everything is so unpredictable and tough, to get the opportunity to make kids laugh, and to give them a few hours of great time together, and go home with a smile and learn some of the values that the movie has, its priceless.”

Who would win a dancing contest between you two?

Salma- “Well it definitely depends on the kind of dancing.  If its flamenco, him, but if its salsa, get out of my way.”

Antonio-“I would definitely win, but 2nd place is not bad.”

You said that both of you have children, how do they feel about you being in a children’s movie?

Salma-“Well my daughter who saw it once is obsessed with it. She loves the character but is very critical. She continually asks me why I don’t have a hat, which I find hilarious.”

Antonio-“My son is 26 now so he usually has comments like ‘it’s cool pop’ and my daughter finds it to be pretty cute.”

How would you compare working on an animated movie to a normal movie which involves acting and which do you prefer?

Antonio-“It is way easier because you are totally free. You can do it completely on your schedule. The best part is when I record the audio, I have a hat on with a plastic sword to imagine myself as Puss when I record.

The Beastie Boys by Alex Goldstein

The Beastie Boys are an american hip-hop trio from New York City. It’s members contain Michael Diamond (Mike D), Adam Yauch (MCA), and Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock). Mike D plays the drums, MCA plays the bass, and Ad-Rock plays the guitar. They have been around since 1979, and started out as a harcore punk band.

Over the years, they have became more into the hip-hop genre of music. They have just released a new song this summer, called “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win. It is a very good song, in my opinion, but it is for a special listener. I know for a fact if i asked my relatives to listen to this song, they wouldn’t like it, because they are simply not used to listening to this type of music.

The Beastie Boys are very special in that they can rap, sing, and play instruments while all mesh to make fantastic songs. The music video for this also shows an episodic of action figures. It is probably one of the coolest music videos i’ve ever seen. Although the beastie boys aren’t on the radio that often anymore, they are still an extremely popular music group, and have received an extravagant amount of awards for their music, which consist of: best rap performance; best hard rock performance; best alternative performance;best rap album;best pop instrumental; etc.

As you can see, they produce all different types and kinds of genres in the music industry, and i would like to see even more out of this very talented group!

The Script Interview-In Concert Fillmore Miami Oct.7th

Over the past few years, there hasn’t been a day where we haven’t heard Ireland’s The Script continually repeating songs like “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved”, “Breakeven”, and “For the First Time.”  We talked to members of this world renowned band and asked them a few questions about what it was like to be in their shoes and some information about the band.
These include where the name, The Script came from. Script guitarist Mark Sheehan said that the name The Script was a common used phrase used by the band while they were forming. Also he said that the name describes the stories and themes about their music. When asked their favorite song that they said that they had no favorite because every song was “their baby.” The band members described touring as a great experience. Some of their favorite places to perform were New York, Los Angeles, Australia and Asia. When asked about their fan’s reaction to their new album, “Science and Faith”, the band said they were surprised by the reaction of their fans and how positive it was.
The Script’s process of writing music is unordinary, creating the beat before the lyrics. Another unordinary trait about the band is their random game that they play, Inappropriate Frisbee. The In this game, the band members randomly throw a Frisbee at each other in inappropriate places, such as libraries, elevators, and more. A final different thing that The Script does than others is their pre-concert ritual. Before every concert the band members  shake hands and look in each other’s eyes for 30 second and say, “Have a great show,” and say “Can’t Break the Chain.”

Writing their Own Script

By keeping their music honest, Irish band The Script rises in fame and popularity

by Moira Fennell Suncoast High School

When The Script’s Glen Powers met Mark Sheehan, who then introduced him to Danny O’Donoghue, the three men never thought that they would one day become a band.

“We just had a jam and then the band just kind of formed around us before we could even see it coming,” Glen said.

But even after they officially formed the band, they never imagined that they would become as popular as they have in recent months.

Now that they have traveled the world to play for millions of fans, they feel like it’s accurate to attribute their success to their honesty in their music. The men of The Script bare their emotions through their music, which, Mark and Glen agree, is what keeps their music “real” and gives it “depth”, setting their music apart from that of other bands and artists.

“Honesty involves wearing your heart on your sleeve, and we had to make that decision to expose ourselves which, especially as guys, was very difficult,” Mark said.

Once they made that decision though, there was no turning back. But without that decision, their music wouldn’t be the “healing process” that it is for them.

“We try not to think about anyone else when we’re writing music,” Mark said.

Instead, they let their emotions flow through them and allow their songs to start from whatever instrument it was meant to be born from. Using their bodies as “human barometers”, they test for a hair-raising moment the first time they play each new song. In this way, The Script is able to take control of their music so that they can use it to tell their stories. And by doing this, they are dominating the music industry.
